Custom 3D-printed costume parts for Brno City Theatre

For Brno City Theatre’s production of Bastard, we printed and finished parts of the Homunculus costume. The supplied 3D design was based on scans of the actors’ bodies; costume designers completed its appearance with surface treatments and ageing effects.

The production of Bastard returned to the stage after thirty years, directed by Petr Gazdík. It premiered on 20 April 2024 on the musical stage of Brno City Theatre.

Inspired by biblical themes, the story follows its protagonist’s journey and encounters with the Holy Spirit and Satan. It explores human identity and direction: who are we, and where are we going?

Our role was to produce and finish the 3D-printed parts for the Homunculus costume.

From a 3D scan to costume parts

The design was based on a 3D scan of the actors’ bodies, allowing each section to be adapted to their proportions. The 3D design was created by Petr Hloušek; the costume designers were Andrea Kučerová and Bára Kuropatová.

We received a prepared 3D design at CUBELAB. We printed the individual parts in PLA, which captures fine detail and can be surface-finished afterwards. The filament was supplied by Czech manufacturer Abaflex.

Surface finishing by the costume designers

After printing and preparation, we handed the parts to the costume designers for finishing, ageing and attachment to the fabric base. The combination of precise shapes, surface treatment and textiles gave Homunculus its final appearance.
