A 3D-printed dog figurine, hand painted

A miniature dog based on photographs. Model adaptation, fine printing and hand painting.

The brief and the finished project

One project that combined the technical possibilities of 3D printing with a particularly personal meaning was the creation of a detailed 3D dog figurine as a unique wedding cake decoration. The client wanted a miniature based on photographs of their dog, allowing this important family member to be part of the occasion in symbolic form.

Together with the client, we selected and purchased a 3D model that closely matched the dog’s type and anatomy. We then adapted it to capture the animal’s proportions, character and typical expression. The aim was a familiar, personal model: not a generic figurine, but a specific, recognisable pet.

We prepared the model at a size suitable for a cake decoration and hand painting, approximately 8 cm tall. This gave us room to work on fine details of the fur, eyes, muzzle and markings. We then printed it using FDM technology in a high-quality material with a fine texture that takes paint well and allows a clean artistic finish.

After support removal and light finishing came the most important part: hand painting based on photographs of the real dog. This stage brings realism and personality to the figurine. We paid particular attention to colour transitions, the shape of markings, fur tones and the small features that make every animal unique.

The finished figurine looked lively, natural and faithful to its subject, like a miniature pet sculpture. The client received both a wedding cake decoration and a personal keepsake to treasure for years. This commission shows how custom 3D printing can combine modern technology, digital modelling and artistic work into a harmonious result.

Projects like this show that 3D printing is not just an industrial tool. It can also create unique, meaningful and fully personalised objects whose value extends well beyond their material.
